JOB SPECIFICATION:

The Development Producer will have excellent creative and communication skills, be a great team player with several years’ experience of working in a Development Team and significant script editing experience. They will be a motivated and dynamic self-starter who will work with the existing Executive Producer on creating a new slate of projects as well as bringing their own ideas to the table for consideration. They will have a proven track record of developing shows and have excellent existing relationships with commissioners, agents and writers.

Creative thinking is key to this role: finding the right projects for the right partners and being instrumental in helping push them through to commission.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Supporting the Executive Producer by being across all projects and assisting in the development process where necessary.
  2. Attending writer, commissioner and agent meetings with the Executive Producer when required.
  3. Working with junior members of the team, attending writer meetings with them when required and offering guidance where necessary.
  4. Proactively seeking out and tracking talent and potential projects to consider; liaising with agents, keeping abreast of industry news, seeking potential IP etc.
  5. Working independently and closely with writers to develop projects to point of commission.
  6. Maintaining relationships with commissioners, writers and agents both in the UK and internationally where appropriate.
  7. Attending weekly meetings with the team and participating in brainstorming sessions.
  8. Using extensive storytelling skills to impact positively on the development process and ensuring the treatment or script is the best it can possibly be.
  9. Maintaining regular communication with key creatives on projects and fostering an environment whereby the creative process can flourish.
  10. Compiling development notes for writers and running development sessions with talent where necessary.
  11. Shortlisting and selecting appropriate and commissionable writing candidates for projects, including meeting with potential writers to assess suitability.
  12. Generation of ideas for discussion by the team.
  13. Script-editing individual projects as required, providing both written and face-to-face feedback.
  14. Tracking talent, reading submissions and responding to/rejecting submissions as appropriate, and participating in weekly development meetings.
  15. Liaising with book scouts and literary agents on material to consider and researching ideas for story, talent and production potential.
  16. Developing high quality project specs/pitch documents, including synopses, treatments and assisting with support materials (visual pitch decks etc) where required.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE:

  1. Must care deeply about making impactful and entertaining television and be an avid viewer/consumer of Drama.
  2. Will have experience in script development including giving script feedback and development notes to writers, assessing projects from a creative perspective and contributing to the generation of ideas and the resolution of script problems.
  3. Will be comfortable working with legal personnel and have a solid understanding of intellectual property rights, writers guild agreements and strong negotiation and relationship management skills.
  4. Must possess a passion for creative excellence as well as an efficient and organized personality with the ability to turn ideas into action.
  5. Will have highly developed editorial skills with sound judgement.
  6. Excellent personal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  7. Knowledge of audiences and ability to focus efforts on identifying and meeting their needs.
  8. Will have strong existing relationships with key writing talent in the UK and in-depth knowledge of emerging talent.
  9. Knowledge of and relationships with key agents within the industry.
  10. Will be a resourceful self-starter with an independent attitude and the ability to lead constructive dialogue with sensitivity and tact.
  11. Will have the ability to work co-operatively with others as part of a team and build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of colleagues.
  12. Will have great attention to detail while still meeting tight deadlines and be able to manage their time effectively
  13. Will be able to contribute constructively to projects across a wide range of genres
